Training Management Systems - General Information

Training Managements Systems (TMS) sometimes referred to as Learning Management Systems (LMS), form the infrastructure of an e-learning system. TMS are a dynamic platform that support the tracking of users (learners), assessing performance, deployment of content, providing administrative functions such as access to user records, as well as providing an environment for chat rooms, threaded discussions, and synchronous learning environments (McCrea et al. 2000; Domingo 1999). TMS often interface with existing enterprise resource planning software applications.

The products of many leading TMS providers include features such as robust functionality, highly scalable, easy implementation, and strong content partnerships (McCrea et al. 2000). These features are especially important when choosing a TMS in order to accommodate the growing number of e-learners.

  Technical Requirements
The following workstation and server requirements are necessary to successfully run OnTrack for Training 5.0.
Workstation Requirements

Minimum Workstation Requirements
Pentium Class CPU
32MB of RAM
50MB of free hard disk
640x480 screen resolution
Windows 95, 98, NT Workstation 4.0

2GB or larger disk (50MB of free disk)
800x600 screen resolution (or higher)
Windows 95,98, NT Workstation or Server 4.0

Server Requirements
Note: these requirements are for typical environments. Having an unusually small or large database will affect system performance. If you require additional assistance in sizing your server, please contact DKSystems.

All SQL Servers/Windows NT - Dedicated Server
Minimum Requirements (30 users or less)
Pentium class CPU
64MB of RAM
2GB of disk
Backup device (usually DAT or DLT tape, Travan is OK)

Recommended System (30 users or less)
Pentium 200 or better CPU
128MB of RAM
2x4GB disk mirrored
Backup Device (DAT, DLT or similar)

Recommended System (30 users or more)
Pentium Pro/Pentium II single or dual processor system
256MB of RAM
2x4GB mirrored for logs
Nx4GB striped for data/operating system
RAID controller with hardware RAID
Backup Device (DAT, DLT or similar)

Non-Dedicated Windows NT Servers and Non-Windows NT Servers
If you already have server hardware, it is possible to use that existing hardware for your DKSystems database server. You will need a competent DBA to determine the sizing for a combined server. The instance requirements for OnTrack for Training vary based on the number of users and the size of the database. For systems of less than 30 users, we recommend that 32-48MB of RAM be dedicated to the instance for OnTrack for Training. For systems with more than 32 users, 128MB of RAM should be dedicated to the OnTrack for Training instance. Many installations will run acceptably with significantly less memory, but the memory requirements for the OnTrack for Training instance can vary widely.
